Genetic Laboratory
Genetic Laboratory at Al Noor Hospital is the first and exclusive centre
to the region in providing Pre-implementation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) to
exclude major abnormalities.
Detecting chromosomal abnormalities in 13, 18, 21, and X-Y which count
for 98% of the devastating genetic diseases affecting newborns.
What is PGD?
Perimplementation genetic diagnosis (PGD) is new approach for the
prevention of genetic disorders. Selecting and transferring back to the
uterus only normal embryos, to achieve an unaffected pregnancy and the
birth of a healthy baby.
By using Assisted Reproductive Technique (ART) of producing and
collecting many eggs, which are then injected with sperm to produce
embryos. Theses are then kept in an incubator until the third day when
they reach the 6-8 cell stage.
The embryo is then biopsied and one cell removed, fixed on a slide with
fluorescent probes where the five major chromosomes (13, 18, 21, X-Y)
can be checked and the embryo sexed. The healthy embryo is then replaced
back into the uterus.
Services:
- Rapid pre-natal diagnosis
- Carrier screening
- Chromosomes analysis, confirming symptoms & pre-symptoms testing
- Genetic variation to detect risk of disease
- Identify studies (paternity, zygosity, tissue typing)
- Fertility studies
In collaboration with the leading Genetics Laboratory in London .
The centre is the first providing direct interpretation and counseling
by a known authority in Clinical Genetics, Prof. M. Patton, of St.
George's Medical School, London.
