ONCOLOGY |
| |
Oncology department is dedicated to treat adult cancer patients
with solid tumors (like breast, bowel, lungs etc.) by using
non-surgical treatment modalities. These include chemotherapy,
hormone therapy, immunotherapy, and palliative care.
Patients needing radiotherapy will be referred to Tawam or
Mafraq Hospital after the cancer surgery is performed in the
surgical department of Al Noor Hospital. In addition, all of the
staging investigation (histopathology, cytology, radiology, and
laboratory tests) to evaluate the type and spread of the cancer
are available in A.N.H.
The department follows internationally approved treatment
protocols recommended by American and European Cancer
Organizations. All of the modern drugs registered by Ministry of
Health, Abu Dhabi , are available in Al Noor Hospital.
The primary treatment of cancer is of uttermost importance.
Surgical intervention and radiotherapy control the disease
locally, but oncological treatment prevents its spread around
the body. Most of the cancer patients need chemo and hormone
therapy. The primary treatment normally lasts from 6 to 9
months.
Cancer is a curable disease. Half of the patients will be cured
however depending, on the type of tumor and its spread at the
time of the diagnosis. Early diagnosis and proper primary
treatment guarantee the best results.
Even patients with advanced, wide spread disease can be
controlled; quality of life will stay good and life expectancy
can be prolonged.
Professor Pentti Grohn, Consultant Oncologist, Head of Oncology
Department, is responsible for such activities and he has over
25 years experience as an oncologist.
