Prof.
Safwan A Taha, MD, FACS, Medical Director and Chief Surgeon of
Al Noor Airport Road Hospital, returned to the country after
participating as faculty-speaker in the annual symposium of the
American National Institute of Cancer "City of Hope (COH)" held
late last March in Salt Lake City, Utah, USA. COH hosts such a
symposium every year and invites authoritative speakers, local
and international, to present their expertise in diverse aspects
of surgery. This year, the symposium was entitled "Minimally
Invasive and Multimodality Approaches in Surgical Oncology".
State-of-the-art surgical management of malignancy was presented
by the speakers, including Prof. Taha, who were experts in
fields ranging from chemotherapy to robotic surgery. This is the
second time that COH invites Prof. Taha who is not new to the
international scene nor to cancer research. His extensive
experience in gastric cancer surgery won him, in 2006, the
prestigious "Travelling Fellowship Award" offered by SAGES
(Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons) for
distinguished papers presented during their annual congress. He,
then, presented his experience in restoring the alimentary tract
continuity following total gastrectomy for gastric cancer. He
was the first Arab Surgeon to achieve this honor. Prof. Taha won
the same prize again the following year (2007) for his
distinguished work in biliary diversion and was the first
surgeon ever to win the award for two consecutive years. Prof.
Taha is Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (Chicago, Il)
and was trained in laparoscopy and bariatric surgery in the US,
France and India. He also holds membership of SAGES, EATS
(European Association for Transluminal Surgery), EDS (European
Digestive Surgery) and ELSA (Endoscopic and Laparoscopic
Surgeons of Asia) and is member of the Board of Examiners, the
Arab Board of Surgery in General Surgery. |
