The Fertility Centre provides the most advanced and comprehensive service for:

1. Fertility treatment, whether for men or women (ICSI, IVF, GIFT) testicular biopsy and sperm recovery (PESA, TESA) freezing of sperm, embryo, eggs and tissue, assisted hatching, blastocyte culture and more recently, embryo biopsy for genetic "sorting out " of gender, either male or female chromosomal analysis for major abnormalities such as Down's syndrome and molecular abnormalities, for example Thalassemia.

2. Gynaecological surgery, mainly for keyhole surgery via laparoscope to remove the uterus, ovarian cysts, ectopic pregnancies, adhesions and burning of scatterd endometriotic pathological lesions with the use of laser. Hysteroscopy looks inside the uterus for diagnosis or to operate by burning the lining to treat excessive bleeding, (endometrial ablation) also of fibroids and polyps. Use of special tape to improve bladder function to cure stress incontinence, (urethra-slingoplasty, TVT).

More recently using pelvic mesh to support and repair any vaginal prolapse. All major and extensive gynecological operations for cancer cases, which may involve bowels or bladder.

3. Maternity for high risk and multiple pregnancies with prenatal diagnosis, amniocentesis and detailed ultrasound scan (3-D) for abnormalities, and pain-free labour via epidural service.

4. Genetic apart from the pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) mentioned earlier, we carry out examination of amniotic cells and blood cells for chromosomal analysis and soon specific tests for tumour recognition.

Fertility Services

The choice of treatment is often difficult and our first priority is to assist couples to make the best choice, according to their particular problems, needs and prospectus of success. Approximately 15% of couples have difficulty in achieving a pregnancy. As there are numerous cases of infertility it is important that the centre they attend offers a comprehensive service.

Intracytoplasimic Sperm injection (ICSI)

ICSI is a technique of gamete micromanipulation in which a single sperm is captured in a microscope pipette and injected into the cytoplasm of a single egg. Initially ICSI was designed for male factor causes but now as it ensures the presence of the male genetic material and yields a higher number of implantable embryos it is the method we use for almost all our cases now days.

In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)

Sometimes described as the test tube baby procedure, IVF gets its name from the fact that fertilization occurs outside the body, in a laboratory dish. Drugs are given to the women to induce many eggs. These eggs are then collected by ultrasound scan through the vagina under local anesthetic and sedation with a hospital stay of 3 to 4 hours. Eggs and sperms get mixed together in a dish and are left in an incubator for at least 48 hours before being inserted into the uterus like a routine examination.

Sperm Recovery

In cases where there is no sperm in the ejaculation, sperm can be recovered by needle aspiration through the epididymis (PESA) or from the testis (TESA) or a small piece of tissue can be taken by a miniature cut (Biopsy) especially if there is only the immature form of sperm present (spermatide).

Intra Uterine Insemination (IUI)

IUI is widely used as a front line assisted reproduction technique for the treatment of unexplained infertility and in some cases of difficulty encountered with intercourse. At the time of ovulation, sperm concentrate is slowly injected into the uterus via a sterile catheter. The procedure is virtually painless and the patient will be sent home after 20-30 minutes.

Cryo-preservation
Spare embryos or sperm or testicular tissue will be frozen in liquid nitrogen for future use.

Others
In cases of embryos or sperm with thick shell and recurrent failure to implant, we weaken the shell by chemical or mechanical methods (Hatching). Also when we have many embryos we can keep them in culture in the incubator for five to six days so as to know which ones survived and which will implant more successfully and continue their journey in the uterus (Blastocyst culture).
Whenever any new procedure therefore proves to be of help, it is applied in the services provided.
